How to Stop PROCRASTINATING ??

None of us are immune. Procrastination sneaks up on us all, some worse than others. In this blog,I'll go over the science of procrastination and provide you with actionable advice to overcome it.

Firstly, How the thought came to write about Procrastination???

So, My mother scolded me for procrastinating all day long and then I thought to write about it. She told me stories of how she procrastinated in her days. Well! that means, everyone Procrastinate. And It's OKAY to do so!!

Now, How to deal with that ?

I think we all hate that guilty feeling that we get, whenever we are procrastinating on something that we know we should be doing and it prevents us to even enjoying things that we do while we procrastinated the thing we should be doing; like chilling, watching movies, hanging out with friends because constantly in the back of our mind, thought is going on that I should be doing something else.

So what happens, is that we prepare a glorious plan in which we write down all the things that my ideal perfect self would do. And, we all get excited how we're finally not going to procrastinate this time and get our life together. Then next morning we do all the things we are supposed to get done. It continues for 4-5 days only, because we have built some over achievable targets for ourselves. Then, again we start procrastinating and get back to that guilty feeling. The VICIOUS CYCLE OF PROCRASTINATION repeat itself.

So, Why the hell in the world Procrastination happens ?

The science behind Procrastination is that it boils down to a battle between the limbic system and prefrontal cortex. The limbic system is a set of brain structures containing the pleasure center, while the prefrontal cortex controls planning and decision making. The prefrontal cortex is less developed and thus weaker, so often times the limbic system wins out, leading to procrastination.

And, Some of the basic reasons why one procrastinate are -
  • Rewards that are far in future
  • Fear of Failure
  • Lack of Energy
  • Lack of motivation
  • Perfectionism......etc.
But, everyone is different. Everyone have different cause for procrastinating.

Firstly, figure out why you are procrastinating?

Earlier, I used to think that may be I am too much on phone or watching too much of movies / daily soaps but even when I eliminated the biggest time suckers like being on phone or watching movies. I noticed that my procrastination was just as bad but I was instead doing things that were you consider good like checking emails, reading a book, cleaning and organizing, exercising & planning (Remember that Vicious circle of procrastination ?). Obviously, all of these things are lot better than being on phone but I noticed that I was using them as a form of procrastination. Maybe sometimes, you too suffer from same.

So with digging in my head bit deeper. I realized that all of the procrastination comes from fear. This part need some self-evaluation and noticing your own habits. So, what I noticed was the things in which I am comfortable or good and I never really procrastinate in them.

In my experience, we tend to procrastinate on things that we fear we will fail or that are just very seemingly hard. Our brain tend to make things seem a lot worse than they actually are. So, may be somethings are little harder for someone and not for others. But, Don't Underestimate yourself. Maybe it will take some more time to you for learn but It'll get better with time. Maybe some one learn dancing in 1 week and you in 2 weeks but eventually, you'll get to it.

So, the secret to overcome procrastination is not written in any book or not in any motivational videos but in yourself. It's actually just doing whatever you dread the most. I know it sounds pretty obvious but it actually makes a lot more sense if you think about it.

The Truth is we only get motivation after we have been doing something from some time and we see the finish line. Start with the most difficult task you have. With time, you'll get motivated for it. Just, Start it now.

Now, To Start is the most difficult thing for us procrastinators. For this, you can decide that you are going to do this task for 30 minutes only and after 30 minutes you'll wrap it up. And, for those 30 minutes you'll give your full attention to this task. Then, with time you'll get motivated for it and COMPLETE IT.

Or one can go with REWARD SYSTEM.

So, What reward system is??

Our brain works on rewards. If you decide to give yourself a reward of watching an episode of some series after getting done with a particular task. It will trigger your brain and motivates you to complete the task ASAP.

Start taking the baby steps to complete the task. The more you do, better you feel about it and the less you will procrastinate.

And, Please don't draw yourself upon some over achievable tasks. It will put you on lack of motivation state, which you don't want.

That's all folks for PROCRASTINATION!!!

Hope you'll find it helpful..!

Why to Follow a ROUTINE ??

Change is something, I believe anyone can accomplish; if they are willing to do, what it takes in order to complete the change. Many people have the preconceived notion that you are who you are, and "WHO YOU ARE" has been determined since you were young. But I know that is not true.. Okay! I am not gonna tell that this is what I do in my daily routines. Or you can follow this kind of routine Or That you should wake up early, do workout in early morning. NOOOO...! I am gonna tell why there is need to follow/build a "ROUTINE". The routine you follow is something that makes you, YOU! Yeah, I know! Sticking to a routine is difficult. It always is. But, If you do what you always did, you will always get what you always got. Just like brushing your teeth in morning, adhering to routine allows us to foster habits that match our goals and aspirations. The beauty of designing a set routine is that is forces us to PRIORITIZE and decide what is important to us. It helps you to...
